What to do when friends come over (30s edition)!

I’m sure some of your best moments with your friends were at get-togethers at somebody’s house. Whether it’s your own house or your friend’s, you can always have a good time there. I know for me, some of the most fun times I had were at my old house and my friend’s house. We have hosted many hangouts together there, from parties to straight up casual activities.

Believe it or not, you can still have these types of get-togethers in people’s houses even in your 30s. And why not? Not everyone wants to go to a bar or restaurant all the time. Hanging out at home with friends can be more fun and relaxing than going out.

But your 30s are going to be different. You’re probably wondering if you should have the same type of house hangouts like in your 20s? Or should you change it up? That’s what we will be talking about today!

In this post, I’ll go over what to do when friends come over if you’re in your 30s. When you’re older, you have a lot more options meaning more fun. I’ll give you some great ideas.

Without further ado, let’s get started!

Offer them drinks and food.

Hey, this isn’t your 20s anymore where you get everyone to pitch in for pizza! In your 30s, you probably have more money to spare, so you can afford offer some food in your house when your friends come over. You can offer some snacks, bake some cookies or maybe even cook them up a meal if you have cooking skills.

As for drinks, it’s nice to have an assortment of them in your home. Alcohol may seem like the obvious option, but not everyone wants to drink beer or liquor at your place. Having a pack of water bottles is always nice to offer to your friends. If they are into drink mixing, you can also offer that as well.

And if course, since you guys are in your 30s now, you can afford to order more food that’s not just pizza. Go out and buy some tasty food for yourselves!

Have different types of entertainment.

When I grew up with my friends in high school and into our 20s, we automatically would always play video games whenever we went to each other’s homes. It was the main hobby that brought us together. And while video games are still pretty big in our lives, in our 30s we’ve also come to appreciate other hobbies such as board games now.

It just goes to show that we are always changing and evolving our interests as we get older (click here to read why friendships change). So to keep your friends entertained while at your place, you should have a variety of activities to do! Here are some ideas:

  • Television. Nothing beats the good ol television. In the 21st century, we have so many TV options such as regular cable, sports games, Netflix, YouTube and more. Sometimes you and your friends just want to watch some stuff together, so the TV will come in handy for this occasion.
  • Board games. Yes! Board games are always fun to play with friends, and there are a huge variety of them that will appeal to almost everyone. From the deep strategy games such as Chess or Battleship, to the fun and wild games like Connect Four and Twister, having a roster of board games available is nice to have in your home.
  • Video games. I’m a little biased since I’ve been a gamer my entire life. But I do think video games today have such massive appeal to everyone, and they can be really fun! Even if you’re not a hardcore gamer, there are a lot of video games catered towards casual gamers. games such as Wii Sports, FIFA, NBA 2K, Mario Kart and Just Dance that are perfect for friends getting together to play games.
  • Sports (if applicable). Speaking of sports games, if the space allows for it, you can also play some sports together with your friends at your place! If you have a backyard or swimming, why not play a friendly game of basketball, soccer or catch?

Be considerate of your family members.

If you have a spouse and/or kids, you’ll want to be considerate of them before inviting any friends over. It’s not like in your 20s where you can do whatever you want with your house. If you have a family, you have to consider them.

Make sure the washroom is available.

This is a given, but sometimes we forget about this! Make sure your washroom is working and functioning when you have friends over. If they need to use the bathroom during the stay, then have it available when they need it.

Since you use the washroom in your house anyways, it will probably be available to begin with. But before your friends come over, you want to make sure that it’s well kept and ready to go for other guests.

Have fun!

Just because you guys are in your 30s, that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun like you did back in the day. In fact, you should be having MORE fun because you are probably wiser and more financially secure than you were in your 20s.

Your 30s doesn’t have to always be serious. When your friends are at your house, you should all be having fun and enjoying yourselves. Even in my 30s, I find it fun to be goofy and not take things seriously when I’m friends. You can let your guard down and be yourself. After all, that’s what friends are for!

Conclusion

Anyways, I hope you found this post informative and useful, and now you know what to do when friends come over. It really isn’t that much different in your 30s. There are so many things you can do, but it’s all about enjoying having your friends over and coming together!
