Here’s How To Find International Friends
How to find international friends!
It’s not something you think about everyday, but I can probably assume you are interested if you are on this article. Yes, you are not alone when it comes to finding international friends.
In fact, there is nothing wrong with wanting a different kind of variety of friends. I can tell you from my own experience, having non-local friends is not only interesting, but also broadens your horizons. The way your local friends think and believe, they are going to be totally different from the ones you met abroad. That is one of many reasons why you should diversify your friends! And today, I’ll show you how.
In this post, I’ll go over 5 ways on how to find international friends. Whether you’re looking for different types or want to meet people around the world, having international friends is a nice thing to have. We will go over all the different ways to do so.
Alright, let’s get started.
1. Language exchanges
The first way to meet international friends is through doing language exchanges. Whether you’re learning a new language yourself or you want to help someone talk in English, you will meet tons of different people when it comes to languages.
For example, I myself am starting to learn a new language and there is a program called (link) where you can find someone who is also learning the same language. And in my experience, I’ve gotten to meet all sorts of people around the world when doing this.
On top of that, I’ve also gone to language exchange meetup events (click here to see how to meet new friends as an adult). And when you put together all sorts of different languages, you get all sorts of people around the world! So this applies both online and offline.
So if you’re trying to learn a new language, you’ll be pleased to know that along the way, you’ll find it easy to make new international friends!
2. Facebook hobby groups
Facebook is not so obvious as a place to meet new people all over the world, but I directly it certainly can be.
Now I’m not talking about randomly messaging people on Facebook. Not at all! That’s a quick way for you to get banned on the website/app.
Chances are, you are probably part of a Facebook group that’s related to your interests and hobbies. From music, art or traveling groups, you likely are part of these things on Facebook. And within those groups, you’ll find people not only in your local area, but internationally as well.
I myself have gotten the opportunity to talk to international people based on the Facebook groups I’ve already joined. So if you’re already using Facebook then chances are, you will be talking to someone from abroad.
3. Instagram
I’ve personally met lots of cool people on Instagram through my own hobby page. Not only were they interested in my content, but I found there are so many wonderful people in this world!
The coolest part is that I have so many Instagram followers that are from a foreign country. And I’ve learned so much about their culture based on the content I follow from them. I’ve spoken and made Instagram friends from international places like Egypt, Mexico, Brazil, Portugal and Australia.
Let’s face it; Instagram is a force to be reckoned with; a lot of people use the app these days. Why not use it to make some international friends?
4. Video gaming
If you’re a video gamer who plays online games, then you probably know this one. Video games are very fun, and with the presence of online gaming, it gives you opportunities to play your favorite games while meeting new people. Since a lot of video games have worldwide appeal, you’re bound to meet others who are not in your local area.
In my experience with online gaming, not only do you get to play with others, you sometimes learn about the culture of different places around the world. For example, I learned about the laid back culture of California when I met someone playing Halo 3.
Of course, you should be into video games yourself before trying to meet international friends through this way.
5. Traveling
Last but most definitely not least, we have traveling. And in my experience, this is the best way to meet international friends! I personally have so many friends from foreign countries through my travels that I couldn’t recommend it enough. And what’s nice is that you’re meeting these people in-person. While there is always a time and place for online interactions, nothing beats meeting someone in real life and interacting with them face-to-face.
So how do you meet new international friends while traveling? Here are some ideas:
- Hostels. I’ve stayed in hostels for pretty much my entire traveling career and not only do you save so much money, you end up meeting so many different international people in hostels. If you haven’t tried staying in a hostel before, I highly recommend trying it out! If sleeping in the same room with strangers makes you feel uncomfortable, then you could always get your own private room while still enjoying the social aspect of hostels.
- Going on group tours. Whether it’s touring a museum or a city attraction, paid group tours are always a gathering where you socialize with the hosts but also with your fellow guests. You’re bound to meet others who are traveling from abroad.
- Festivals and events. If you’re traveling abroad to a festival or event, then guess what? There are people from other places doing the exact same thing as you are! I’ve personally met so many people from the events I went to while traveling. It helps that you’re probably into the same things as they are, so you don’t have to worry about commonalities.
As you can see, you can meet so many people during your travels!
