5 best hobbies to make new friends!

We all love our hobbies. They can be so much fun and something you’re passionate about. But a nice bonus of having hobbies is the ability to make new friends. I myself have made so many friends through the various hobbies I take part in. It’s probably the easiest way to meet people.

Unlike going to a nightclub or social event where you’re meeting strangers, taking part in hobbies is different. Because it’s something you’re genuinely interested in, so it’s easier and more natural to talk to people who are into the same things as you are. So you should definitely utilize your hobbies to talk to new people!

But which hobbies are the best for making new friends? I’m sure that’s what you wanted to know. And of course, that’s what we will be talking about today.

In this post, I’ll go over the 5 best hobbies to make new friends and everything you need to know about it. These hobbies are from my experience and I’ve made some good friends taking part in them. You don’t have to enjoy all these hobbies but some of these ones might appeal to you.

Without further ado, let’s get started on the best hobbies to make new friends!

Where can you find hobby groups?

My personal favorite way to find hobby groups is by joining Meetup.com. Meetup has so many different groups around the world, you’ll more than likely find one that suits your hobbies and interests. I myself have joined and started my own groups on Meetup. So I highly recommend you use this site to find hobby groups to meet new friends.

If you don’t want to use Meetup, you can always find other ways such as billboards and word of mouth. Click here to find different ways to meet new friends.

Before you set out for new hobbies…

Make sure that you’re genuinely interested in these hobbies and don’t make it a huge priority to meet new friends. It might sound like an oxymoron, but you don’t want to come off as desperate to people. The best way is to take part in the hobby, with socializing being a bonus.

Alright, let’s get into the hobbies.

1. Walking and hiking

Do you like long walks on the beach? If so, then you should join a group that does a lot of walking, hiking or exploring! Chances are, there will be a local walking group that goes around the city together. It’s one thing to go sightseeing and walking in parks and greenery. It’s another when you get to spend that time with people!

I personally love exploring, so this type of hobby came natural to me. So if you enjoy walking and exploring your own city, then I recommend joining a walking or hiking group! From my experience, you meet all sorts of cool and different people.

2. Video games

Back in the day, video games were pretty niche and I remember when I was a kid, liking video games wasn’t cool at all. You were considered a nerd, so it kind of had a bad reputation.

But now, video games have become mainstream and it’s totally fine to be a video gamer. And you’ll be surprised how many people enjoy playing games now! Even in my group of friends and family, I’ve noticed a lot of them enjoy playing games on their mobile phone or on consoles such as the Nintendo Switch. It’s definitely not a niche hobby anymore.

So if you’re into video games yourself, why not take part in a video game group? You’ll get to meet people who are into gaming like you! Not only can you play with them in-person, you can also play online with your friends. Online gaming is so big right now and it’s so easy to connect with friends.

3. Traveling

Traveling is a great way to meet new people!

This one is a little unique, but I can tell you that traveling is a great way to meet new friends and new people. This is one of those hobbies where you definitely want to genuinely be into it; don’t spend money on traveling just to make friends. Do it because you want to!

Anyways, I myself have met many new friends while traveling. I don’t know what it is; either people are more open to you when you’re abroad. Or you yourself become more approachable, whether you know it or not! There are many ways to meet new friends while traveling, such as staying in a hostel. 4. Book club

Who doesn’t love books? I certainly enjoy reading, and maybe you do as well! If that’s the case, then consider joining a book club to share your love for your favorite authors and genres.

The thing I like about book clubs is how chill they are. I find them pretty relaxing, and it’s fun to socialize with people who are into similar books like I am. Hopefully you’re able to join a group that allows you to talk to others, and not just reading all the time.

5. Foodies

Last but not least, I would recommend joining a foodie group. It’s a low-entry type of hobby in my opinion. After all, who doesn’t like eating yummy food?

You can take part and join in on trying new restaurants and cuisines with others. Not only is it a great way to meet new people who appreciate different foods, you get to fill your belly with delicious food!

The only downside of restaurant type events is that it can be difficult to socialize with others. In particular, when you’re sat down at a restaurant table, you’re pretty much stuck with socializing with the people sitting next to you. However, you can make the effort to get up and talk to different on the other side of the table!
